IBM Travelstar Data Recovery

There are two common failures with the IBM Travelstar hard drive.

ibm travelstar hard drive

The first failure prevents the laptop from booting and the hard drive will not be recognised in the system BIOS. Often a quiet and regular "ticking" noise will be heard from the IBM hard drive. This is generally as a result of some form of mechanical failure.

The second common fault again prevents the laptop from booting and the drive will again not be recognised in the BIOS. No sound will be heard from the drive - not even the sound of platter rotation, and the hard drive will appear to be dead.

Drives effected with above problems include:

 IC25 Series:
 IC25N020ATCS04 (20GB)  IC25N020ATDA04 (20GB)
 IC25N030ATCS04 (30GB)  IC25N030ATDA04 (30GB)
 IC25N040ATCS04 (40GB)  IC25N040ATDA04 (40GB)

These problems also affect DJSA and DARA series drives.

With either of these failures it is important power down the IBM hard drive as soon as they begin to malfunction, as persistent efforts to recover the data by conventional means can result in permanent data loss through media damage.
